The Rector’s Story

Hi I’m Nigel Elliott, Rector of Wombwell since 3rd September 2008. Looking back over my life - it’s surprising how much Wombwell has been a part of my story.

Wombwell features on my birth certificate - even though I was born a few miles away in Worsbrough Dale. After leaving school I began work with the TSB, working in the Barnsley branch. But guess where I helped out a few times? Wombwell.

In my younger days I played the cornet with Barrow Colliery Brass Band - including the concerts on a Sunday lunch time at Wombwell Sporting Association.

I attended St Thomas’ Church in Worsbrough Dale, where I helped to establish a company Church Lads and Church Girls Brigade - with the support of certain officers from the Wombwell Company.

I also went along to Barnsley Youth For Christ, which is when I became a Christian, and where I met my wife Chris. We were married at Darfield in 1980 and we have 2 daughters: Rachel and Rebekah, Chris is Senior Teacher with the Autistic Society, based in Thurnscoe.

I left the bank in 1986 to move across the Pennines to  work as Deputy Diocesan Stewardship Officer in Manchester Diocese. 4 Years later the family moved to Nottingham where I trained for the Ordained ministry. After a curacy at Radcliffe back in Manchester Diocese, we returned to South Yorkshire in 1995 when I became Priest in Charge of Kilnhurst. I was made vicar there in 1999, and was appointed Area Dean of Wath in 2006,

My interests include caravan holidays, listening to music, watching films and learning to play golf watching sport - especially to see how The Reds have done.

My hope for my time in Wombwell is that

We will enjoy worshipping God together
We will enjoy working for God together
We will enjoy witnessing to God together

So that Almighty God: Father Son and Holy Spirit receives all the glory honour and praise
